Here’s to a turkey dinner that ruffles feathers As we come together to lament the weather.
To wine and stuffing with a side of suffering As our brains won’t stop buffering.
To the vegetables neatly cut up And to the uncle that won’t shut up.
To saving room for pumpkin pie And to making mom cry. To parades and football games And that familiar shame of shared last names.
To secret recipes and delicious spices That linger as we scroll through our devices (among other vices). To the endless binging And the once-fringe comments that leave us cringing. To arguments without precedent Between those not reticent to speak of politics or presidents. To the meal of all meals That reveals our favorite Black Friday deals. To overconsumption and under-appreciation Of our Nation on this brief vacation.
But above all… To the hope of finding something greater In all this theater with those who will not be here later.
As we decipher the art of living, Here’s to a happy, healthy Thanksgiving!
Wishing you and your family the grace, joy, and peace of the season. Very much enjoying your writing. Take good care.
